This book shows Christoph Martin Wieland's independent position in the literature and culture of around 1800 in a new way: Wieland's work describes a significant knowledge transfer between the Early Modern Age and the Modern Age. This is achieved by a double reference to the knowledge base of the Enlightenment on the one hand and to the philosophical and aesthetic tradition of antiquity on the other hand. In the interdisciplinary discourse between philosophy and historical, literary, and cultural studies this book explores the relationship between historical narratives and the experiences on which they are based and which give the first impetus for a genuine need to tell the story. Here a new concept of historical experience is formulated which elucidates the pre-narrative dimensions of historical creation of meaning and thus also enables a more adequate determination of the relationship of history and narration as well as individual and collective history.
