Wolframs Titurel gehort zu den bedeutendsten Dichtungen des Mittelalters. Er ist in drei Handschriften uberliefert, deren Texte sich so stark unterscheiden, da man von Fassungen sprechen mu. Das Verhaltnis dieser Fassungen zu einem mutmalichen Original ist nicht bestimmbar. Die Uberlieferungslage wird zusatzlich dadurch kompliziert, da das Werk im sogenannten Jungeren Titurel (von einem gewissen Albrecht) weitergedichtet wurde, bei dessen Tradierung man Wolframs Text mehrfach nachverglichen hat. Die Untersuchung vereint eine allgemeine Theorie historisch-literarischer Gattungen mit einer Geschichte des Sonetts vom Mittelalter bis zur Romantik. Vorgefuhrt wird die Wandlungsfahigkeit kunstlerischer Gattungen, wobei kommunikations- und medientheoretische, soziale und historisch-kulturelle Aspekte besondere Beachtung finden. Fur das Sonett werden Modelle fur seine mittelalterliche Entstehung und seine verschiedenen historischen Auspragungen entworfen. Es handelt sich um ein Grundlagenwerk zur Gattungstheorie und zur deutschen und europaischen Sonettgeschichte.

His correspondence lends insight to the events unfolding there and documents his interactions with his circle of acquaintances in Leipzig, whom he normally saw in person. The essays validate the humanistic foundations and transformations of poetical theory up to their culmination in the canonical notion of lyricism established in Goethe's time. They examine the Epicedium, a remarkable example of Baroque occasional poetry and its history through Schiller and Morike, and they discuss its interconnections with biblical sayings, devotional literature, and poetry during the 17th and 18th centuries.

The eighth volume draws on printed and unprinted sources that give insights into Goethe's activities in the years 1811 and 1812. Important encounters in Bohemia are documented (Empress Maria Ludovica, Louis Bonaparte, Beethoven), Goethe makes the acquaintance of the French emissary Saint Aignan, he first meets Friedrich von Muller - with whom he was later to have a closer relationship - and the friendship with Sulpiz Boisseree begins with the visit in May 1811.
