This book offers a self-contained account of the 3-manifold invariants arising from the original Jones polynomial. These are the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev and the Turaev-Viro invariants. Starting from the Kauffman bracket model for the Jones polynomial and the diagrammatic Temperley-Lieb algebra, higher-order polynomial invariants of links are constructed and combined to form the 3-manifold invariants. The methods in this book are based on a recoupling theory for the Temperley-Lieb algebra. This recoupling theory is a q-deformation of the SU(2) spin networks of Roger Penrose.

During the summer of 1965, an informal seminar in geometric topology was held at the University of Wisconsin under the direction of Professor Bing. Twenty-five of these lectures are included in this study, among them Professor Bing's lecture describing the recent attacks of Haken and Poincare on the Poincare conjectures, and sketching a proof of Haken's main result.

In essence the proceedings of the 1967 meeting in Baton Rouge, the volume offers significant papers in the topology of infinite dimensional linear spaces, fixed point theory in infinite dimensional spaces, infinite dimensional differential topology, and infinite dimensional pointset topology.
