In 1792, 400,000 people put their signature to petitions calling for the abolition of the slave trade. This work explains how this remarkable expression of support for black people was organized and orchestrated, and how it contributed to the growth of popular politics in Britain.

Colonial rule began in most of Africa in the later 19th entury and lasted for about 100 years. It started with an endless succession of small, but often brutal, wars of conquest, for which the moral justification was that the European conqurors were bringing civilization to darkest Africa. An intrinsic part of this so-called civilising mission was the eradication of slave raiding, slave trading and slavery, all of which were widespread on the continent. In fact for many years in most areas, the colonial rulers, although they passed anti-slavery laws in various forms, did very little to...

This collection examines the effects of slavery and emancipation on race, class and gender in societies of the American South, the Caribbean, Latin America and West Africa. The contributors discuss what slavery has to teach us about patterns of adjustment and change, black identity and the extent to which enslaved peoples succeeded in creating a dynamic world of interaction between the Americas. They examine how emancipation was defined, how it affected attitudes towards slavery, patterns of labour usage and relationships between workers as well as between workers and their former owners.

Since 1978, the country has gone through a simultaneous process of democratization and federalization. Slaves could be presented as inferior to free people, and almost subhuman. Conversely, emphasis could be laid upon their essential humanity and even nobility.

This collection examines little-studied forms of slavery in the Indian Ocean World up to the period of European economic and political predominance in the 19th and 20th centuries. These studies advance the field beyond the dominant divisions of the Atlantic slave-world, between free and slave status and between liberty and servitude dominated by chattel slavery. The Indian Ocean World was characterized by complex and shifting forms of servitude, many of which differed significant from that of the chattel slave and which were affected by human and natural forces including state-building,...
