Mitochondrial transport systems are essential to mitochondrial function and therefore to energy homeostasis within the cell. The book contains studies utilizing the techniques of biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology and genetics to reveal the structure and function of mitochondrial transport systems. It is divided into the following six sections: - Proton Translocation: The Uncoupling Protein and the ATPase; - Carriers and Transporters; - Mitochondrial Ion Channels; Structure of the Outer Mitochondrial Membrane Channel, VDAC; - VDAC, Peripheral Kinases and Energy...

Presented here are recent data on the mechanisms of action of different dusts and fibres of industrial interest. Emphasis is placed on the use of cell and organ culture and lavage cell populations obtained from man and laboratory animals to elucidate cellular and molecular events occurring after their interaction with fibrous and non-fibrous particulates including metal compounds. In four sections, the volume provides research findings in the following areas: - Cellular and Metabolic Changes Caused by Mineral Dusts - Molecular Changes and DNA Alterations Produced by Mineral Dusts - In Vivo...

Provided here are the latest techniques of NMR as applied to the study of proteins, carbohydrates and nucleic acids. The first chapters are devoted to an introduction to NMR and parameters related to molecular structure and molecular interactions. NMR experiments from basic 1D to 2D, 3D and 4D, used in combination with isotopically labelled molecules, are described and a general strategy is presented for biomacromolecular structure determination. Subsequent chapters deal with more advanced principles and techniques and their applications to structural and dynamic processes involving...

During the last years much attention has been given to the investigation of the roles of specific growth modulators acting on liver cell populations. HGF functions as a pleotropic factor in the liver as well as in other extrahepatic tissues. The hepatic stem cell compartment is thought to play a major role in liver tissue restoration. Mechanisms of cell growth and cell death of the liver are described in detail, with particular emphasis on apoptosis. The functions of HBV-pX protein and the roles of hepatitis B virus gene expression relation to hepatocellular carcinoma are discussed....

Reviewed here is the current knowledge of proton transport mechanisms in mammals. The emphasis is on gastric acid secretion and the role of the H+, K+-ATPase, but molecular and cellular information on other P-, V- and F-type H+-ATPases, in bone, kidney, plants and yeast, as well as other cation ATPases, are included for important comparisons. The role of proton/anion antiports, symports and channels in proton transport is discussed. Further attention is given to the regulation of proton transport mechanisms and cellular mechanisms to resist damage from highly acidic environments.

Presented here are recent advances in biochemical, toxicological, and regulatory aspects of oxidative drug metabolizing enzymes. Mainly cytochrome P450-dependent and flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMO) are covered. Moreover, the book deals with genotoxicity studies and toxicological interactions of environmental chemicals and mechanisms of mutagenicity and tumor formation. The construction of genetically engineered mammalian cells for the production of a specific P450 isozyme and the application of these cell lines in drug metabolism, mutagenicity and toxicity studies are described in...

This volume contains the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on "Trafficking of Intracellular Membranes: From Molecular Sorting to Membrane Fusion," held in Espinho, Portugal, from June 19 to June 30,1994. The objective of this Institute was to survey recent developments and to discuss future directions in the rapidly advancing field of membrane cell biology, with particular emphasis on the dynamical properties and intracellular flow of membranes. A wide range of interrelated topics around the central theme of intracellular trafficking of membranes was covered,...

A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Molecular Mechanisms of Transcellular Signaling: from the Membrane to the Gene" was held on the Island of Spetsai, Greece, from August 15- 27, 1994. The aim of this Institute was to bring together researchers in the field of signal transduction mechanisms, transcription factors and gene regulation with those actively involved in studies on the implications of oxygen radicals and antioxidant defence mechanisms for cell function. As diverse as these fields may be, the emergence of their interconnection during the course of the Institute was an eye-opener for...

In the first of three sections of this book, an overview of "in vitro" toxicology is provided. The molecular biology of cellular toxicity, receptor-mediated mechanisms, structure-activity relationships, pharmacokinetic modeling, and the use of biosensors in toxicological studies are treated in detail. The second section covers some of the very important aspects that allow the analysis of the mechanisms of toxicity, e.g. intercellular communication and signal processing, the cytoskeleton, apoptosis, and free radical mediated toxicity. The last section presents "in " "vitro" studies on...

This book is a collection of papers presented at a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Biology and Molecular Biology of Plant-Pathogen Interactions" which was held at Dillington College, Ilminster, UK, 1-6 September 1985. It had been preceded by Advanced Study Institutes at Porte Conte, Sardinia in 1975 and at Cape Sounion, Greece in 1981. In recent years, methods for the manipulation and transfer of genes have revolutionized our understanding of gene structure and function. It was thus opportune to bring together scientists from distinct disciplines, e. g. plant pathology, cytology,...
