This proceedings volume contains revised and reviewed papersbased on talks presented at the first International Workshopon Nonmonotonic and Inductive Logic held in Karlsruhe, December 1990. The workshop was supported by theVolkswagen-Stiftung, Hannover, and provided a forum forresearchers from the two fields to communicate and findareas of cooperation. The papersare organized into sectionson: - Nonmonotonicity in logic programs- Axiomatic approach to nonmonotonic reasoning- Inductive inference- Autoepistemic logic- Belief updatesThe bulk of the papers are devoted to nonmonotonic logic...

Antisense technology may result in dramatic changes in the therapy of many diseases and may provide tools to dissect pharmacological processes and to confirm the roles of various genes. In this volume, progress in the understanding of antisense technology and its use in creating new drugs is discussed. Potential caveats, pitfalls and limitations of the technology are also presented. In the next few years the pace at which new molecular targets will be identified will increase exponentially as the sequencing of the human genome and of other genomes proceeds.

Following the rapid developments in the UV-B measurement techniques and the rapidly growing research in the field in the late 80's and early 90's, we organized a large gathering of distinguished experts in a NATO Advanced Study Institute, held in Halkidiki, Greece on October, 2-11. 1995. The Institute was organized so as to include state of the art lectures on most aspects of solar ultraviolet radiation and its effects. This was achieved by extended lectures and discussions given in five sessions by 27 lecturers and a demonstration of filed measurements and calibration techniques at the end...

Welcome to the second IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Multimedia (IEEE PCM 2001) held in Zhongguanchun, Beijing, China, October 22 24, 2001. Building upon the success of the inaugural IEEE PCM 2000 in Sydney in December 2000, the second PCM again brought together the researchers, developers, practitioners, and educators of multimedia in the Pacific area. Theoretical breakthroughs and practical systems were presented at this conference, thanks to the sponsorship by the IEEE Circuit and Systems Society, IEEE Signal Processing Society, China Computer Foundation, China Society of Image and...

This volume deals with all the known aspects of somatostatin, one of the phylogenetically oldest hormones, which is a regulatory peptide with remarkable characteristics. It is a non-classical neurotransmitter discovered less than 20 years ago in both the central nervous system and in the gastroenteropancreatic system, regulating the secretion of both pituitary and digestive hormones. It also ensures nutrient homeostasis and has therapeutic uses.

This volume treats the analysis of 3D dynamic scenes using a stereovision system. Several approaches are described, for example two different methods of dealing with long and short sequences of images of an unknown environment, including an arbitrary number of rigid mobile objects. Results obtained from stereovision systems are found to be superior to those from monocular image systems, which are often very sensitive to noise and therefore of little use in practice. It is shown that motion estimation can be further improved by the explicit modelling of uncertainty in geometric objects. The...

This volume provides a comprehensive account of the most recent trends in human leukemia, as presented at the Ninth Wilsede Meeting. The internationally renowned contributors deal with all different aspects of these diseases: As well as discussing important clinical aspects of leukemia, new information on the biological basis of leukemia gained using the methods of molecular genetics, cell and molecular biology, virology, and immunology is covered. The book shows both the complexity of leukemia research, as well as the value of basic scientific research in furthering clinical medicine and...
