It has been 15 years since the first edition of Stochastic Integration and Differential Equations, A New Approach appeared, and in those years many other texts on the same subject have been published, often with connections to applications, especially mathematical finance. Yet in spite of the apparent simplicity of approach, none of these books has used the functional analytic method of presenting semimartingales and stochastic integration. Thus a 2nd edition seems worthwhile and timely, though it is no longer appropriate to call it "a new approach."

The study of dynamical systems is a well established field. This book provides a panorama of several aspects of interest to mathematicians and physicists. It collects the material of several courses at the graduate level given by the authors, avoiding detailed proofs in exchange for numerous illustrations and examples. Apart from common subjects in this field, a lot of attention is given to questions of physical measurement and stochastic properties of chaotic dynamical systems.

This book demonstrates that while elliptic and hyperbolic tori determine the distribution of maximal invariant tori, they themselves form n-parameter families. Therefore, torus bifurcations of high co-dimension may be found in a single given Hamiltonian system, absent untypical conditions or external parameters. The text moves logically from the integrable case, in which symmetries allow for reduction to bifurcating equilibria, to non-integrability, where smooth parametrisations must be replaced by Cantor sets.
