The objective of this project was to provide the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) with a more complete understanding of the non-regulatory factors which make for safer commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers. Through the review of available literature, the relationship between the CMV driver and the motor carrier was explored with respect to safety outcomes. A tailored Haddon Matrix was used as a means to structure the literature and provide clear direction for the development of future intervention strategies. Haddon's Matrix provides a framework for identifying factors...

The Federal Aviation Administration, Office of Environment and Energy has developed Version 6.0 of the Integrated noise Model with support from the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, Acoustics Facility for development of the acoustic computation module, and from the ATAC Corporation for systems integration, development of the graphic interface, and methods for computing aircraft flight profiles and constructing flight paths, which are processed by the acoustics module.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), a part of DOT's Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA), presents State Transportation Statistics 2009, a statistical profile of transportation in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. This is the seventh annual edition of the State Transportation Statistics, and a companion document to the National Transportation Statistics (NTS), which is updated quarterly on the BTS website. Like the previous editions, this document presents transportation information from RITA/BTS, other federal government agencies, and other national...

This report summarizes and highlights freight shipments for each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on the final release of CFS data in December 2009. It provides tables for each State's value and weight of shipments, major commodity shipped, mode of transportation used, distance shipped, State of origin, State of destination, and industry.

This document provides an objective appraisal of the physical conditions, operational performance, and financing mechanisms of highways, bridges, and transit systems based both on the current state of these systems and on the projected future state of these systems under a set of alternative future investment scenarios. This report offers a comprehensive, factual background to support the development and evaluation of legislative, program, and budget options at all levels of government. It also serves as a primary source of information for national and international news media, transportation...

This report examines the effects of airplane geometrical configuration on the acoustic directivity characteristics and on the propagation of airplane noise. This effect of airplane geometry is referred to in this report as "engine installation effects." Engine installation effects are one of the components of lateral attenuation. Lateral attenuation in the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Integrated Noise Model (INM) has been based on the methods described in the Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) Aerospace Information Report (AIR) 1751. Released in 1981, SAE-AIR-1751 is founded on...

These analyses support the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' study of navigation in the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) and Illinois Waterway (IWW) and address the need to examine the potential of "non-structural measures" to improve efficiency in those waterways. This report describes the initial assessment and selection candidate measures, the activities of two stakeholder Focus Groups in support of the project team, the analytical approach, and the results.

Infrastructure consists of the basic facilities - such as transportation and communications systems, utilities, and public institutions - needed for the functioning of a community or society. Sometimes the development of these facilities can negatively impact habitat and ecosystems. Techniques have been developed to better avoid, minimize, and mitigate these impacts, as well as the impacts of past infrastructure projects. However, the avoidance, minimization, and mitigation efforts used may not always provide the greatest environmental benefit, or may do very little to promote ecosystem...
