IV-4 Ordinis Quarti Tomus Quartus: Apophthegmatum Libri I-IV

Erasmus' Apophthegmata present a great number of famous, pithy, remarkable sayings by famous people from Classical Antiquity. Erasmus based his Latin version of the anecdotes on famous words in Plutarch. He follows the collection of Greek sayings in Plutarch loosely, often more or less in paraphrase, but parts are almost literal translations. In the introduction (and in the notes to the Latin text) the editor makes the case that Erasmus' handling of Plutarch's texts was very much influenced by works of his fellow humanists Traversari and Filelfo.

V-7 Ordinis Quinti Tomus Septimus: de Immensa Dei Misericordia Concio

Csm Rademaker
This volume contains some of the theological writings of Erasmus, viz. a sermon on God's immense mercy, a comparison of a virgin and a martyr, a sermon on the young Jesus, a short treatise on the sorrow of Jesus in Gethsemane, the adhortation to read the Bible, which is one of the prefaces of Erasmus' New Testament project, and a commentary on two hymns by Prudentius on Christmas and Epiphany. The volume shows some aspects of Erasmus' theology and spirituality, embedded in the Roman Catholic Church and the liturgy of the mass.

VI-10 Ordinis Sexti Tomus Decimus: Annotationes in Novum Testamentum (Pars Sexta)

Poll-Van de Lisdonk
This volume of the Erasmi Opera Omnia contains the sixth and last volume of Erasmus's Annotationes in Nouum Testamentum, viz. his annotations on the two letters to Timothy, the letter to Titos and Philemon, and the Catholic letters (James, 1. 2. Petr, 1.2.3. John, Judas); it closes with Erasmus's annotations on the Apocalypse. To the critical Latin text commentaries have been added in which the sources Erasmus used are mentioned. Moreover, explanations on relevant philological, theological and historical questions are given that are necessary for the comprehension of the Latin text. Der...

IX-5 Ordinis Noni Tomus Quintus: Controversies with Noel Beda

Edwin Rabbie
This volume contains the polemic against Natalis Beda, syndic of the University of Paris. Unlike most of Erasmus' apologies, it does not concern the edition of the Novum Instrumentum, Erasmus' new Latin translation of and commentary on the Greek text of the New Testament. It is rather a fourfold defence of (parts of) Erasmus' highly popular paraphrases on the New Testament (published between 1517 and 1524) and as such is the most voluminous of Erasmus' polemics against any of his Roman Catholic adversaries (only the Hyperaspistes in two books against Martin Luther is somewhat longer). After...

IX-6 Ordinis Noni Tomus Sextus: Polemics with Alberto Pio of Carpe

Chris L. Heesakkers
This volume of the Erasmi Opera Omnia contains the critical edition of Erasmus' polemics with the Italian layman Alberto Pio, Prince of Carpi, about Erasmus' New Testament Project, in particular his Paraphrases, and also his former successful works, such as his Enchiridion and Moriae encomium. Erasmus was very annoyed that a layman had criticised his theological works and, moreover, had suggested that Erasmus' theological and moral views came suspiciously close to Luther's. Erasmus also blamed his opponent for not reading the earlier defences of his views in his polemics...

IX-6 Ordinis Noni Tomus Septimus: Declarationes Ad Censuras Lutetiae Vulgatas Sub Nomine Facultatis Theologiae Parisiensis

James K. Farge; Clarence H. Miller; Jan Bloemendal
This book contains the critical text (with introduction and annotations) of Eramus's detailed, revised answer to the objections brought by the Paris theologians against 174 propositions drawn from a wide range of Erasmus's theological works and his Colloquies, the Declarationes. The Paris attack was the culmination of a decade of complex and often heated exchanges between Erasmus and the University under the leadership of Noel Beda. The topics include the major (and some minor) subjects which arose because of Erasmus's own program of theological and religious reform. They also include...

IX-8 Ordinis Noni Tomus Octavus: Apologia Contra Sanctium Caranzam Et Quatuor Apologiae Contra Stunicam

Henk Jan Jonge; Jan Bloemendal
In 1516 Erasmus produced a new Latin translation of the New Testament and the first edition of the Greek New Testament text ever published. The work won much praise and admiration, but also aroused vehement opposition. The most tenacious adversary of Erasmus' New Testament was the Spaniard Diego Lopez de Zuniga, fervently opposed to Erasmus' aim to translate the New Testament in more classical and more elegant Latin than that of the Vulgate. From 1520 to 1524, Zuniga, supported by his compatriot Sancho Carranza, published seven attacks on Erasmus. Erasmus defended himself in six apologias...
