Erasmus' Apophthegmata present a great number of famous, pithy, remarkable sayings by famous people from Classical Antiquity. Erasmus based his Latin version of the anecdotes on famous words in Plutarch. He follows the collection of Greek sayings in Plutarch loosely, often more or less in paraphrase, but parts are almost literal translations. In the introduction (and in the notes to the Latin text) the editor makes the case that Erasmus' handling of Plutarch's texts was very much influenced by works of his fellow humanists Traversari and Filelfo.

This volume contains some of the theological writings of Erasmus, viz. a sermon on God's immense mercy, a comparison of a virgin and a martyr, a sermon on the young Jesus, a short treatise on the sorrow of Jesus in Gethsemane, the adhortation to read the Bible, which is one of the prefaces of Erasmus' New Testament project, and a commentary on two hymns by Prudentius on Christmas and Epiphany. The volume shows some aspects of Erasmus' theology and spirituality, embedded in the Roman Catholic Church and the liturgy of the mass.

This volume contains the polemic against Natalis Beda, syndic of the University of Paris. Unlike most of Erasmus' apologies, it does not concern the edition of the Novum Instrumentum, Erasmus' new Latin translation of and commentary on the Greek text of the New Testament. In 1516 Erasmus produced a new Latin translation of the New Testament and the first edition of the Greek New Testament text ever published. The work won much praise and admiration, but also aroused vehement opposition.
