A comparative perspective on the problems and issues of the transfer of knowledge and technology in and between western and former socialist countries, focusing on three key technologies: laser technology, biotechnology, and information technology. The book highlights the specific challenges facing economies in transition in technology policy and commercialisation. Furthermore, it gives an excellent insight into current technology forecasting practice and methodology, and the use of forecasting results in framing science and technology policy. Audience: Those involved in...

Environmental pollution is one of the main problems to confront humanity, with the heavy metals occupying a leading role among the most pernicious pollutants. The metals cause cancer and other sicknesses. Their cytotoxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic potentials are not fully understood, and any thorough investigation demands the combined efforts of scientists drawn from many different disciplines. But the effects of heavy metals are not all negative: some, like cis-DDP, and some ruthenium and tin complexes, have antitumour activity. The idea underlying the present work is...

After a year's successful operation, the European DENIS project is now a scientific reality and its close cousin 2MASS (USA) is about to come into operation. The observational and data reduction processes of both DENIS and 2MASS are fully described in this volume. Already the impact of DENIS is making itself felt in the astronomical community in areas of research as diverse as cosmology, the evolution of galaxies, the interstellar medium, the search for brown dwarfs, and stellar structure and evolution. The first routine results from DENIS and the preliminary results from the 2MASS...

This is a survey of current developments in the field of plutonium disposal by the application of advanced nuclear systems, both critical and subcritical. National research and development plans are also summarized. The actinide-fuelled critical reactors are associated with control problems, since they tend to have a small delayed neutron fraction coupled with a small Doppler effect and a positive void coefficient. Current thinking is turning to accelerator-driven subcritical systems for the transmutation of actinides.
