This book reconciles the existence of technical trading with the Efficient Market Hypothesis. By analyzing a well-known agent-based model, the Santa Fe Institute Artificial Stock Market (SFI-ASM), it finds that when selective forces are weak, financial evolution cannot guarantee that only the fittest trading rules will survive. Its main contribution lies in the application of standard results from population genetics which have widely been neglected in the agent-based community.

This report on the state of the art and future directions of public-key cryptography is published in accordance with the terms of reference of the European Institute for System Security (EISS). The EISS was founded in 1988 by cabinet resolution of the state government of Baden-W}rttemberg and its basic task is scientific research and knowledge transfer in the field of security in telecommunications and computer and information systems. This report gives the results of an EISS workshop on public-keycryptography and contains seven chapters: an introduction, the scope of the workshop, the topics...

Uncertainties and changes are pervasive characteristics of modern systems involving interactions between humans, economics, nature and technology. These systems are often too complex to allow for precise evaluations and, as a result, the lack of proper management (control) may create significant risks. In order to develop robust strategies we need approaches which explic itly deal with uncertainties, risks and changing conditions. One rather general approach is to characterize (explicitly or implicitly) uncertainties by objec tive or subjective probabilities (measures of confidence or...

LANCELOT is a software package for solving large-scale nonlinear optimization problems. This book is our attempt to provide a coherent overview of the package and its use. This includes details of how one might present examples to the package, how the algorithm tries to solve these examples and various technical issues which may be useful to implementors of the software. We hope this book will be of use to both researchers and practitioners in nonlinear programming. Although the book is primarily concerned with a specific optimization package, the issues discussed have much wider implications...

Scientists and engineers from industry, academia, and major research institutes from 19 countries contributed to the Vienna Conference on Human Computer Interaction (VCHCI '93). This volume contains the proceedings of the conference. Only submissions of the highest scientific quality were accepted as papers, and all contributions address the latest research and application in the human aspects of design and use of computing systems. The papers cover a large field of human computer interaction including design, evaluation, interactive architectures, cognitive models, workplace environment, and...

The author derives an efficient and accurate pricing tool for interest-rate derivatives within a Fourier-transform based pricing approach, which is generally applicable to exponential-affine jump-diffusion models.

This book presents a macroeconomic dynamic model a la Solow-Swan, including the market for labor, in a discrete time structure. The model is expanded to include expenditure on R&D and public expenditure on infrastructure. For each of the three models the results are shown in time series figures, which demonstrate that even small changes in the parameters produce responses in the time behavior of the main variables: from steady growth, to regular cycles, to chaotic-like time paths.

This volume contains the results obtained by a symposium which took place in Paris, France, on May 04-05, 1999, hosted by the International Union of Railways, UIC. This symposium was organised within the framework of the Brite/Euram project TRANSAERO. The TRANSAERO project bundles the expertise of three railway companies and eight universities and research institutions in Europe to improve the physical understanding of the time-dependent effects of sidewind forces, train passing and pressure waves in tunnels. The goal was to find efficient and economically satisfying solutions to these...

Over the last years, due to intensive competition in the knowledge economy, legal aspects surrounding intellectual property (IP) rights - including litigation and settlement - have continuously gained in importance. Correspondingly, professional IP management has become an indispensable element of successful value-based management (VBM) in research-intensive firms.
With this text, the author proposes an integrated approach to patent risk and capital budgeting in pharmaceutical research and development (R and D), developing an option-based view (OBV) of imperfect patent protection,...
