In this study of Minoan cult practice, the author looks beyond the many vivid images from Cretan prehistory, focussing on the stratigraphy of the artefacts and buildings. She lists all the known cultural rooms in a database and divides them into primary and secondary rooms, according to their cultural objects and architectural situation. The former were selected for their good state of preservation, with their artefacts found in situ. These rooms were characterised by objects which were recognised as cultural by archaeology, present in other ancient religions better known from written sources...

This volume presents and compares palynological evidence from two Italian sites in order to reconstruct environmental and climatic conditions in the Lower Palaeolithic period. Data from Ca'Belvedere di Monte Poggiolo in the foothills of the Apennine mountains, and La Pineta in the province of Molise, south-east of Rome, are presented separately and then compared. Background discussion of the geography, geology, archaeology, climate and vegetation around these two sites opens the volume, followed by an outline discussion of the methodology of Lebreton's research. French text; abstracts in...

The third volume in The Adriatic Islands Project, The work utilises, essentially, the same research methodologies developed for survey on Hvar and Brae. The continuing reliance of project staff on complex computer technologies to store and analyse the large project databases also remains, and the impact of the increasing sophistication of these technologies for display of data can be seen in this publication. This book, covering prehistory to medieval times, is divided into two parts, reflecting the diverse nature of the areas under study.

Cetacean remains from coastal sites in northern Terra del Fuego and southern Patagonia were analysed with the intention of providing a better understanding of the nature of these archaeofaunal assemblages, the dynamic nature of these coastal habitats, and human activities taking place. Through taphonomic study of the whale, dolphin and porpoise remains, along with ethnohistorical research. Florencia Borella argues that hunter-gatherers made occasional visits to these coasts to exploit beach carcasses, and suggests that the evidence points towards the exploitation of cetacean remains for the...

Thirteen papers from a conference held in Barcelona in 2005 on the subject of 'War and territory in the Roman world: historical and archaeological approaches'. The contributors consider the relationship between the army and society, between the emperor and his army, between warfare and the environment, as well as more specific subjects: the representation of military power; the relationship between local and central power, especially at the frontiers of the empire; imperial administration; changes in imagery on coinage; war and the management of human and material resources. Seven of the...
