Cetacean remains from coastal sites in northern Terra del Fuego and southern Patagonia were analysed with the intention of providing a better understanding of the nature of these archaeofaunal assemblages, the dynamic nature of these coastal habitats, and human activities taking place. Through taphonomic study of the whale, dolphin and porpoise remains, along with ethnohistorical research. Florencia Borella argues that hunter-gatherers made occasional visits to these coasts to exploit beach carcasses, and suggests that the evidence points towards the exploitation of cetacean remains for the production of bone implements rather than primarily for the consumption of the mammals.
