Ovid's "Metamorphoses" gains its ideal twenty-first-century herald in Stanley Lombardo's bracing translation of a wellspring of Western art and literature that is too often treated, even by poets, as a mere vehicle for the scores of myths it recasts and transmits rather than as a unified work of art with epic-scale ambitions of its own. Such misconceptions are unlikely to survive a reading of Lombardo's rendering, which vividly mirrors the brutality, sadness, comedy, irony, tenderness, and eeriness of Ovid's vast world as well as the poem s effortless pacing. Under Lombardo's spell,...

This is
the first separate edition of Metamorphoses XI since that of G. A. T. Davies
in 1907. While Davies' edition is incomplete (it omits certain lines) and his
commentary is mainly concerned with philological matter, this new edition
gives a complete text and the notes are designed to assist appreciation of
Ovid's literary qualities. The introduction seeks to define Ovid's literary
originality in the Metamorphoses and analyses his considerable influence upon
English literature. The appendix provides an opportunity for comparative
literary criticism. Book...

First published in 1999 within the bilingual collection Sammlung Tusculum, the Latin/German edition of Ovid s Amores (Erotic Poems) has now been revised and updated in a way which includes and reflects the findings of recent scholarship. With its new introduction, the annotations, an essay on the reception of the poems, and a comprehensive bibliography, the edition presented here will be an invaluable tool for students and specialists alike.

This edition contains the Latin text as well as in-depth commentary notes which provide language support, explanation of difficult words and phrases, and...

Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso, 43 BCE17 CE), born at Sulmo, studied rhetoric and law at Rome. Later he did considerable public service there, and otherwise devoted himself to poetry and to society. He continued writing poetry, a kindly man, leading a temperate life. He died in exile.

Ovid's main surviving works are the "Metamorphoses, " a source of inspiration to artists and...
