Barth Hoogstraten was born in 1924 in Holland. He was a member of the Dutch underground during the Nazi occupation of his country. He received an officer training in England and was awarded the Dutch Purple Heart. In 1956 he immigrated to the United States and became a pioneer in cancer chemotherapy. He was the first American Cancer Society Professor of Clinical Oncology and was an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, London. In retirement he allows his love for history to get the better of him.
