This volume contains 27 contributions to the Second Russian-German Advanced Research Workshop on Computational Science and High Performance Computing presented in March 2005 at Stuttgart, Germany. Contributions range from computer science, mathematics and high performance computing to applications in mechanical and aerospace engineering.

This book is a comprehensive state-of-the-knowledge summation of shock wave reflection phenomena from a phenomenological point of view. It includes a thorough introduction to oblique shock wave reflections, dealing with both regular and Mach types. It also covers in detail the corresponding two- and three-shock theories. The book moves on to describe reflection phenomena in a variety of flow types, as well as providing the resolution of the Neumann paradox.

Results are given of experimental and theoretical studies of "gas-solid particles" turbulent two-phase flows. Special emphasis is placed on studies of the behavior of particles suspended in a turbulent gas flow and their feedback effect on the characteristics of flow of the carrier phase. The characteristics of heterogeneous flows in channels (pipes) are analyzed, as well as those in the vicinity of the critical points of bodies subjected to flow and in the boundary layer developing on their surface. This work brings together previously unpublished notes contributed by participants of the IUTAM Symposium on Hamiltonian Dynamics, Vortex Structures, Turbulence (Moscow, 25-30 August 2006). The study of vortex motion is of great interest to fluid and gas dynamics: since all real flows are vortical in nature, applications of the vortex theory are extremely diverse, many of them (e.g. aircraft dynamics, atmospheric and ocean phenomena) being especially important.

The Symposium brought together many of the world's experts in fluid mechanics, microfabrication and control theory to discover the synergy that can lead to real advances and perhaps find ways in which collaborative projects may proceed. The high profile meeting was attended by keynote speakers who are leaders in their fields. A key driver was the improvement in flow efficiency to reduce drag, and thereby emissions arising from transport. About 65 papers were presented.
