The author examines the seven extant plays of Aeschylus against the political and military background of his time. As one who himself fought at the battle of Salamis, Aeschylus was profoundly concerned with military events (the messenger speech in Persians) and potitical changes (Eumenides). In this volume, Podlecki adopted a 'historicist' approach to tragedy, adding a new dimension to the understanding of Aeschylus' poetry.

Based on Ziegler's revised text, this book provides a commentary on Plutarch's "Life of Alexander." It devotes most of its space to historical matters, comparing Plutarch's narrative at every point with the sources. In addition, it adds a fresh introduction and select bibliographies on Plutarch and on Alexander himself.

The Roman poet Statius' 4th book of "Silvae," published in AD 95, follows its preface with nine poems celebrating occasions from the building of a road to the gift-giving Saturnalian festival. Alcidamas is an important figure in the development of Greek rhetoric early in the fourth century BC. Pupil of Gorgias, rival of Isocrates, and teacher of Aeschines, he also influenced Demosthenes and was later admired by both Aristotle and Cicero.
