In den Jahren 1786 bis 1790 verfasste Friedrich Maximilian Klinger die drei Tragodien, die antike Stoffe rezipieren und verandern. Vor allem die beiden "Medea"-Dramen, deren Originalitat Klinger selbst hervorhebt, sind eine wichtige Station in der Geschichte der literarischen Gestaltung dieser Figur von der Antike bis in die Gegenwart. Der Neudruck bietet die Erstausgaben der Stucke und in einem Variantenapparat die Abweichungen in den zu Klingers Lebzeiten erschienenen rechtmaigen Editionen sowie Informationen uber die Entstehung der Dramen.
