This useful volume in the Inside the Ancient World series is a clear, accessible introduction to Roman Comedy, aimed at the GCSE/A level student.

The late Kenneth McLeish studied Classics and Music at Worcester College, Oxford. After starting as a schoolteacher, he became a full-time translator, author and dramatist. His original plays and his translations from ancient drama, as well as from Strindberg, Ibsen and Feydeau, have been widely performed, most notably by the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

These two Greek tragedies need no introduction. Their power, riches and influence are immense. All the more reason, therefore, for a volume that can steer the reader through the Penguin translation by Robert Fagles, in which form these masterpieces have reached a far wider audience than Sophocles' original Greek. John Wilkins' Companion to the "Antigone" and Matthew Macleod's to "Oedipus the King," together with an introduction discussing Sophocles and Attic tragedy, provide a valuable tool for the teacher, pupil or general reader.

Euripides was particularly noted for his sensitive portrayals of women and for finding a sympathetic side to those whom the stock mythology tended to see as evil monsters, such as Helen of Troy. Medea murdered her children by Jason when he deserted her fora new wife; Electra and Orestes killed their own mother in revenge for her betrayal and murder of their father Agamemnon. This kind of searing tragedy may easily be read in translation but its appreciation inevitably involves conventions and references which may elude the reader.
