This document presents the first major study of the prehistory of North Park, the northernmost of the three intermontane basins in Colorado. The archaeological investigations were conducted by the University of Colorado for the bureau of Land Management to determine areas suitable for leasing and mining coal. These data have also provided baseline information for the preparation of a land use plan encompassing North Park.

In 2000, under the Clinton Administration, a new national land conservation system was created by order of the Secretary of the Interior, and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) was given the honor of managing this new system of public lands. Codified into Federal law in the 2009 Omnibus Public Land Management Act enacted by President Barack Obama, it is officially called the National Landscape Conservation System and includes a wide range of special areas, called National Conservation Lands, on the BLM administered public lands throughout the country, mostly in the West.

The purpose of this research has been to put together data on the cultural resources of the Santa Rosa Mountains and associated parts of the California desert as part of a larger study presently being conducted by the Bureau of Land Management Desert Planning Staff. In summer 1999, an extensive aerial survey of cliff-nesting raptors was conducted in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A) on Alaska's North Slope. No similarly extensive survey had been conducted since 1977. In the interim, the regional population of the Arctic peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus tundrius) had increased, as shown by monitoring along the Colville River. Because of the wide range of needs and uses, the BLM's routes represent a broad spectrum of linear features-from engineered roadways with asphalt surfaces through challenging trails accessible only to nonmotorized traffic. Inherent in the wide range of uses and "customers" is a varied vocabulary used to describe the linear features that includes roads, trails, paths, routes, and a host of derivatives of the basic terms. In 2002, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service raised concerns about the potential for flash floods in eperneral stream channels to rupture natural gas pipelines and carry toxic condensates to the Green River, which would have deletrious effects on numerous special- status fish species. In November of the same year, BLM hydrologists visited the Uinta Basin in Utah to Survey stream channels and compute flood magnitudes and depths to better understand possible flooding scenarios.

Black Footed Ferrets are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act and historically occured throughout the grasslands and intermountain basins of west central North America where populations of prarie dogs occured.

The helium survey program is conducted by soliciting natural gas samples from throughout the United States and other countries with free-market economies. The helium survey, in its present scope, would not be possible without the assistance of the helium and petroleum industries, State and Federal agencies, and the many individuals engaged in oil and gas exploration and production.

Approximately 15 million ha of land managed by the Bureau of Land Management in the western United States are leased for oil, gas, or geothermal energy production, but few studies have specifically investigated the potential disturbance effects energy development may have on nesting raptors. The potential for disturbance is suggested by studies of nesting raptors and other human activities, such as construction, hiking, camping, and rock climbing. The potential for nest disturbance is influenced by factors such as disturbance proximity and type, as well as previous exposure to disturbance.

The Ferruginous Hawk is commonly described as a species of raptor that is particularly sensitive to human disturbance, but also is one of the most versatile in use of nest substrates. Across its range, the Ferruginous Hawk is known as a consummate open country specialist, and is known to nest on diverse array of natural substrates, including the ground, piles of bison bones, small rock piles, larger rock outcropings and cliffs, stout shrubs and a variety of erosional formations.
