Kate McCloud, a middle-class mother, is married to a loving but indulgent husband, Jim. They have two children, a home and all that seems to make life comfortable. Kate begins to suffer from clinical depression. Jim admits her to a psychiatric hospital where shock therapy is administered. As Kate's being discharged from the hospital an aide tells the McClouds to "Trust in the Lord with all their heart, not to rely on their own understanding.
