Kate McCloud, a middle-class mother, is married to a loving but indulgent husband, Jim. They have two children, a home and all that seems to make life comfortable. Kate begins to suffer from clinical depression. Jim admits her to a psychiatric hospital where shock therapy is administered. As Kate's being discharged from the hospital an aide tells the McClouds to "Trust in the Lord with all their heart, not to rely on their own understanding. In everything to look to Him, He will direct their path." The McClouds are sure life will be wonderful now, but the therapy doesn't stop life's worries, confusion and heartaches. Kate's depression rebounds. Kate's always kept her family cloistered, not wanting to bother with others and their problems. So when her depression returns with a vengeance, she feels alone and hopeless. Trying to find peace, she looks unsuccessfully to today's popular psychotherapy. The McClouds find they have to depend on others and are amazed at their kindness. They could dismiss what the nurse's aide told them, but the Lord puts people in their lives who share with them the same Scripture verses. When Jim's neighbors explain salvation, which he readily accepts, Kate's furious and feels her life is falling apart. She abhors the idea of help from others and their fanatical religious views. She does all she can to push her husband away until the Lord puts her into a position where she desperately needs him and the people she has come to dislike. After many days of unhappiness, which she brings upon herself, the Lord breaks through and she finally understands and believes what Proverbs 3:5-6 means, and is overwhelmed with the amazing Truth she finds in the Bible. Kate's thankful that the Lord would keep using His Word, her situations, and other people to call her to Himself, even though she did all she could to drive everyone away, including Him. Kate finally enjoys living the life she has searched for, a life filled with truth and peace.
