America used to be the greatest nation of all, but we've lost our edge. Our government isn't honest and is riddled with corruption. Our national traditions have fallen by the wayside, and our nonsensical government regulations, laws and controls impinge upon our constitutional freedoms. Is there anything we can do? Yes, says Peter Hughes, and in Death of the American Heart: A Blueprint to Engage the Silent Majority, he shows how we can restore out country to its rightful place in the world. Aimed at the Silent Majority, Death of the American Heart offers both unbridled optimism and a call to...

"By turns absurd, sophisticated, bawdy, tender, precise and sprawling, The Pistol Tree Poems captures the intellectual intimacy and infectious spontaneity of poetic collaboration at its white-hot best. There's brilliance and ingenuity on display in every poem here-a searching co-intelligence shot through with moments of emotional intensity." (Nathan Thompson)

PETER HUGHES was born in Oxford in 1956. After attending local state schools he did stints at Cheltenham Art College, Anglia Polytechnic and Stirling University. He has worked as a teacher and translator, among other things, in the UK and in Italy. He lives on the Norfolk coast. Of "Behoven," the final sequence in this collection, Peter Riley comments that it is "probably the most sustained and chiming thing he has done, goes further, into an elegiac depth without ever relinquishing the verbal wit we expect of him."

Michael Servetus, a Spaniard executed for heresy in John Calvin's Geneva, is remembered as an important Reformation-era theologian and as a physician credited with the discovery of the circulation of the blood through the lungs. His first book, On the Errors of the Trinity, so shocked both Catholics and Protestants that he was compelled to live under an assumed name. All but a few copies of his magnum opus, Christianity Restored, were destroyed shortly after publication. However, the case of Servetus, which has been taken up by Voltaire, Gibbon, and many others, marks the beginning of the...
