Jacob is a sixty-one year old Jewish widower. He is lonely and depressed mourning the recent loss of his wife of forty years, as well as the recent loss of his sight. He is living alone for the first time, and reflecting on his past. He hires an aide, a young black woman named Knahurra. Knahurra is the Jewish word from the Kabbala for "evil eye."
