Jacob is a sixty-one year old Jewish widower. He is lonely and depressed mourning the recent loss of his wife of forty years, as well as the recent loss of his sight. He is living alone for the first time, and reflecting on his past. He hires an aide, a young black woman named Knahurra. Knahurra is the Jewish word from the Kabbala for "evil eye." Although Jacob and Knahurra are both from Brooklyn their lives could not be more different. The one thing they have in common, however, is bad luck. Knahurra has suffered poverty, incest, rape and abortion. Yet, Jacob and Knahurra together change their fate and their future.
