This report presents results from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Roadside Intervention Model for fiscal year 2007. The model estimates the number of crashes avoided, as well as injuries avoided and lives saved, as a result of the agency's roadside inspection program. The Roadside Intervention Model uses a risk-based approach to estimates the benefits of the roadside inspection program. With this approach, each violation detected at the roadside is assigned a crash risk. When these violations are corrected as a result of an inspection, the associated crash risks are removed...

This report examines the market dynamics and benefits associated with the deployment and diffusion of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies across the United States. For several ITS technologies, the current market structure, events that have influenced the historical deployment trends, and factors that may play a role in future deployment are all examined and analyzed. This qualitative research consists primarily of interviews with suppliers and public sector purchasers. The report also presents monetized estimates of the mobility, safety, and environmental benefits produced...

The primary goal of the MNWR Alternative Transportation Study is to identify transportation intervention options that could improve alternative transportation access to MNWR. While this study focuses primarily on MNWR, it takes into account important relationships to transportation within Chatham as a whole, particularly related to the downtown area and access to the federally owned Lighthouse Beach. The study identifies interventions that: improve multi-modal access to MNWR and within Chatham, reduce traffic and parking congestion around MNWR and within Chatham, improve traveler safety,...

The purpose of this document is to provide human factors considerations in the integration of traffic information and indications and alerts for runway status on an airport surface moving map. The US DOT Volpe Center, in support of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Office of Aircraft Certification, gathered information in two ways. First, we conducted observations during demonstrations of ADS-B surface conflict detection algorithms sponsored by the FAA Surveillance & Broadcast Services Office. Second, we visited Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Daytona Beach, Florida, to...

This is the yearly snapshot of the literature examined in the framework of the Federal Aviation Administration/Volpe Center Flight Simulator Human Factors Program and entered in an EndNote(r) database. It describes 1131 documents, 118 more than last year's edition which it replaces. We are making this literature database available to the public because of feedback received from researchers all over the world that it helps their own investigations. The document has been stripped of any notes reflecting subjective assessments of the reviewers. What remains is a collection, with abstracts and...

This industry survey provides an overview of the currently available surface moving map products, as of March, 2009. Thirteen manufacturers and six research organizations participated and provided descriptions of the information elements they depict and the functions they are implementing. This report was conducted in support of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) but the information is intended to be of use to anyone interested in surface moving map display products. This industry survey is divided into three sections. The first describes the method for the survey and summarizes the...
