This text summarizes the status of open universities and institutions which offer both on-site and distance learning. It opens with an examination of eight institutions and looks at how they have developed and changed over since 1978. The book then looks at open and distance learning in an exemplary group of countries, including Eastern and Central Europe, India, South Africa, Tanzania and Latin America. Each author of one of these geographically-oriented chapters also takes some account of development in other countries where there is a useful point of comparison.
