For the first time, this study examines the full range of spatial expression used in the Hittite world through a fruitful combination of insights from Hittitology, cognitive linguistics, and Indo-European studies. The volume includes an introduction to the field as well as annotated and translated texts, thus making it accessible to a heterogeneous audience.

Anhand verschiedener Fallbeispiele untersuchen die Beitrage, inwieweit in der Antike die Herrschaft uber ein groeres Territorium auf der Ansiedlung von aktiven oder ehemaligen Militars beruhte. Die Leitfrage ist die nach dem Zusammenhang der historischen Situation der Grundung, der Beteiligten und der Lage der Siedlung mit einer daraus abzuleitenden strategischen Bedeutung zur Beherrschung von Land- und Seeterritorien, Wegen, Grenzen, anderen Stadten, einer Vorbevolkerung etc., also die Verknupfung der raumlichen Bedingungen und der historischen Ereignisse.

The ancient city of Rome can be understood as an ensemble of monuments, as a space of action for its inhabitants, as a literary construction. Communication took place in it, about it and through it; that is by means of furnishing it with a conscious programme of buildings and works of art.
