I suppose the impulse to write this book dates back to my shame and anger in India when men and women of my own race extolled suttee, and the amazement with which I first saw the memorials of Hindu kings, with the sati’s couching forms.
But the impulse was slight, and would have slept but for a publisher’s interest. Messrs. Allen & Unwin passed on to me questions asked about suttee by their reader when reporting on my share in Three Eastern Plays. Receiving my reply, they suggested that I should right on this subject.

The subject of the present volume, in essence is the hand and hand's extensions. We cannot insist too strongly that in the evolution of life the "decisive moment" arrived when a living being– who became man– adopted the erect attitude, thus freeing his hands, and when the industrious activity was inauguarted which this freedom made possible. In the use of the hand as an instrument, we have the manifestation of an important physical progress and the promise of further progress.

This volume can not be regarded as a history of the doctrine of Atonement, nor yet as a study of the Scriptural witness to it. It is rather an examination of the various theories and the more recent trends of thought with regard to it.
An explanation is necessary with regard to two points in the study. Firstly, it is confined to Britain and the tendencies of thought in this country and secondly only those thinkers have been included who have exercised an appreciative influence in certain circles and whose contributions to the subject have carried weight in the sphere of theological thought.
