This volume contains the proceedings of a workshop held in Melbourne, Australia, entitled 'Coupling of Fluids, Structures and Waves in Aeronautics'. The 22 papers deal with new computational methods for multi-disciplinary design in aeronautics. They are grouped into chapters on fluids, structures, electromagnetics, optimisation, mathematical methods and tools, and aircraft design. Several papers treat coupling of these themes in a multi-physics setting. Included is a 17-page report of a Round Table discussion entitled 'Future Tools for Design and Manufacture of Innovative Products in the...

Methodic investigations of laminar-turbulent transition in wall-bounded she ar flows under controlled conditions are essential for untangling the various complex phenomena of the transition process occurring in flows at practical conditions. They allow understanding of the instability processes of the la minar flow, and thus enable the development of tools for flow control. On the one hand the laminar flow regime can be extended by delaying transition to reduce viscous drag, and on the other hand large-scale flow disturbances or transition can be forced in order to enhance momentum and mass...

The aerospace industry increasingly relies on advanced numerical simulation tools in the early design phase. This volume provides the results of a German initiative which combines many of the CFD development activities from the German Aerospace Center (DLR), universities, and aircraft industry. Numerical algorithms for structured and hybrid Navier-Stokes solvers are presented in detail. The capabilities of the software for complex industrial applications are demonstrated.

A few years ago the Helmholtz Association (HGF) consisting of 15 research Institutions including the German Aerospace Center (DLR) started a network research program called Virtual Institutes . The basic idea of this program was to establish research groups formed by Helmholtz research centers and universities to study and develop methods or technologies for future applications and educate young scientists. It should also enable and encourage the partners of this Virtual Institute after 3 years funding to continue their cooperation in other programs. Following this HGF request and chance the...

This volume contains nineteen contributions of work, conducted since 1998 in the French - German Research Programme "Numerical Flow Simulation," which was initiated in 1996 by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the Deutsche Forschungsge meinschaft (DFG). The main purpose of this second publication on the research programme, is to give an overview over recent progress, and to make the obtained results available to the public. The reports are grouped, like those in the first publication (NNFM 66, 1998), under the four headings "Devel opment of Solution Techniques,"...

The interest in the field of active flow control (AFC) is steadily increasing. In - cent years the number of conferences and special sessions devoted to AFC org- ized by various institutions around the world continuously rises. New advanced courses for AFC are offered by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Ast- nautics (AIAA), the European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion (ERCOFTAC), the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM), the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI), to name just a few. New books on AFC are published by prominent colleagues of...
