11 The GAMM Committee for Efficient Numerical Methods for Partial 11 Differential Equations organises workshops on subjects concerning the algorithmic treatment of partial differential equations. The topics are discretisation methods like the finite element and the boundary element method for various types of applications in structural and fluid mechanics. Particular attention is devoted to the advanced solution methods. The series of such workshops was continued in 1991, January 25- 27, with the 7th Kiel-Seminar on the special topic 11 11 Numerical techniques for boundary element methods at...

This volume contains 22 papers presented at the Kiel Seminar in 1992. The Kiel Seminars are well known, and cover special areas in numerical methods for partial differential equations, numerical linear algebra, numerical methods for integral equations and related areas. The papers cover a broad range of topics from mathematical theory to practical applications of incomplete decompositions as smoothers in multi-grid methods, as preconditioners for conjugate gradient-type methods and the use of ILU for systems of partial differential equations.

INTRODUCTION 1. - The problem for analysis and requirements 2. - Results 3. - Comparison of computer times 4. - Conclusion. INTRODUCTION In 1981 it appeared to the organizers that a workshop to compare codes to solve the Navier -Stokes equations would be of great interest to the community of numerical analysts and users working on CFD (Computer fluid Dynamics}. A test problem would have to be selected with the following features: 1. it should be suited for all known methods (finite differences, finite elements, spectral ... ) thus the geometry should be simple. 2. it should be simple so that...

During the week of December 8-13, 1984, a conference on Multi-Grid Methods was held at the Mathematisches Forschungs- institut (Mathematical Research Institute) in Oberwolfach. The conference was suggested by the GAMM-Committee "Effiziente numerische Verfahren fUr partielle Differentialgleichungen." We were pleased to have 42 participants from 12 countries. These proceedings contain some contributions to the confe- rence. The centre of interest in the more theoretical contri- butions were exact convergence proofs for multi-grid method. Here, the theoretical foundation for the application of...

The GAMM Committee for Numerical Methods in Fluid Mechanics organizes workshops which should bring together experts of a narrow field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to exchange ideas and experiences in order to speed-up the development in this field. In this sense it was suggested that a workshop should treat the solution of CFD problems on vector computers. Thus we organized a workshop with the title "The efficient use of vector computers with emphasis on computational fluid dynamics." The workshop took place at the Computing Centre of the University of Karlsruhe, March 13-15,1985....

The Dutch Association for Numerical Fluid Mechanics (Kontaktgroep Numerieke Stromingsleer, KNSL) was founded in The Netherlands in November 1974. Since then, the Association has organized meetings twice a year. The present volume contains the proceedings of the 25th meeting, held on October 20, 1986, at Delft University of Technology. The purpose of the KNSL is to provide an opportunity for researchers in numerical fluid mechanics to meet regularly and to inform each other about their research in an informal atmosphere. Presentations preferably describe work in progress, and discussion of...

In full multigrid methods for elliptic difference equations one works on a sequence of meshes where a number of pre- and/or postsmoothing steps are performed on each level. As is well known these methods can converge very fast on problems with a smooth solution and a regular mesh, but the rate of convergence can be severely degraded for problems with unisotropy or discontinuous coefficients unless some form of robust smoother is used. Also problems can arise with the increasingly coarser meshes because for some types of discretization methods, coercivity may be lost on coarse meshes and on...

This monograph is the result of my PhD thesis work in Computational Fluid Dynamics at the Massachusettes Institute of Technology under the supervision of Professor Earll Murman. A new finite element al gorithm is presented for solving the steady Euler equations describing the flow of an inviscid, compressible, ideal gas. This algorithm uses a finite element spatial discretization coupled with a Runge-Kutta time integration to relax to steady state. It is shown that other algorithms, such as finite difference and finite volume methods, can be derived using finite element principles. A...

The Sonderforschungsbereich "Reactive Flow, Diffusion and Transport" (SFB 359) at Heidelberg University and the IBM Scientific Center Heidelberg have jointly organized a workshop on "Numerical Methods for the Navier-Stokes Equations." This workshop took place from October 25-28, 1993, at the IBM Scientific Center and was attended by 113 scientists from 13 countries. The scientific program consisted of 12 invited and 34 contributed lectures which dealt with various aspects of the numerical solution of the Navier- Stokes equations describing compressible as well as incompressible flows. The...
