Writing in the June 1965 issue of theEconomic Journal, Harry G. Johnson begins with a sentence seemingly calibrated to the scale of the book he set himself to review: "The long-awaited monetary history of the United States by Friedman and Schwartz is in every sense of the term a monumental scholarly achievement--monumental in its sheer bulk, monumental in the definitiveness of its treatment of innumerable issues, large and small . . . monumental, above all, in the theoretical and statistical effort and ingenuity that have been brought to bear on the solution of complex and subtle...

This volume, from the 1956 Conference, deals with the nature, reliability, and the uses of the income data included in the 1950 census. It contrasts this data with income information from other sources--field surveys, and administrative records of government regulatory, fiscal, and social security agencies. Another group of papers deals with substantive findings based on income data. Of three papers of a more general nature, one surveys the frontiers of size distribution research, another builds a bridge between the census data and other income data, and a third provides an historical...

This conference volume deals with the question of what the economic impact of a shift in federal taxation toward greater use of indirect taxes would be with respect to the rate of saving and investment, personal effort, the balance of payments, and the efficiency of resource use. A major focus therefore is on the economic growth and balance-of-payments aspects which have been most emphasized in recent proposals for substitution of a sales tax or a value-added tax for part of the existing income tax.

Since the early 1980s, the rapidly increasing cost of college, together with what many see as inadequate attention to teaching, has elicited a barrage of protest. Buying the Best looks at the realities behind these criticisms--at the economic factors that are in fact driving the institutions that have been described as machines without brakes. In designing his study, Charles Clotfelter examines the escalation in spending in the arts and sciences at four elite institutions: Harvard, Duke, Chicago, and Carleton. He argues that the rise in costs has less to do with increasing faculty...
