Despite its increasing importance, the verification and validation of the human-machine interface is perhaps the most overlooked aspect of system development. Although much has been written about the design and developmentprocess, very little organized information is available on how to verifyand validate highly complex and highly coupled dynamic systems. Inability toevaluate such systems adequately may become the limiting factor in our ability to employ systems that our technology and knowledge allow us to design. This volume, based on a NATO Advanced Science Institute held in 1992, is...

This volume contains the lectures presented at the NATO ADVANCED STUDY INSTITUTE that took place at Newark, Delaware, U. S. A. , July 14-23, 1985. The objective of this meeting was to present and discuss selected topics associated with transport phenomena in porous media. By their very nature, porous media and phenomena of transport of extensive quantities that take place in them, are very complex. The solid matrix may be rigid, or deformable (elastically, or following some other constitutive relation), the void space may be occupied by one or more fluid phases. Each fluid phase may be...

Gian Gaspare Zuffa Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra Universita della Calabria 87030 Castiglione Cosentino Stazione, Cosenza, ITALY The tradition has been to consider Sedimentology and Sedimen tary Petrology as quite separate areas of research. It is however impossible to arrive at an optimal description of sedimentary rocks without integrating the two fields since sedimentary processes and compositional aspects are strongly intertwined. The study of arenites is of particular importance in obtaining paleogeographic and paleotectonic reconstructions aimed at deter mining the geodynamics of...

During the last decade, rapid advances have been made in the area of flow analysis in the components of gas turbine engines. Improving the design methods of turbomachine blade rows and under standing of the flow phenomena through them, has become one of the major research topics for aE'rodynamists. This increase of research efforts is due to the need of reducing the weight and fuel consumption of turbojet engines for the same thrust levels. One way of achieving this is to design more efficient components working at high local velocities. Design efforts can lead to desired results only if the...

In Decembe, r, 1984 a NATO-sponsored Advanced Study Institute entitled "Human Asessment: Cognition and Motivation" took place in Athens. It succeeded in attracting a great many of the most eminent scholars and researchers in this area, both as lecturers and participants. The contributors to this book are mostly members of staff who taught at the Institute. The chapters they have written are designed to provide an introduction to the principal issues that arise in the study of the assessment of intelligence and cognition. Since most of the protagonists are represented in this book the student...

We have shown that simple power-law dynamics is expected for flexible fractal objects. Although the predicted behavior is well established for linear polymers, the situationm is considerably more complex for colloidal aggregates. In the latter case, the observed K-dependence of (r) can be explained either in terms of non-asymptotic hydrodynamics or in terms of weak power-law polydispersity. In the case of powders (alumina, in particular) apparent fractal behavior seen in static scattering is not found in the dynamics. ID. W. Schaefer, J. E. Martin, P. Wiitzius, and D. S. Cannell, Phys. Rev....

Science and Technology of Polymer Colloids G.W. Poehlein, R.H. Ottewill, J.W. Goodwin (editors) Polymer colloids, more commonly known as latexes, are important in the manufacture of synthetic elastomers, commodity polymers, surface coatings, adhesive and numerous specialty products. The significant growth of the commercial production of polymer latexes during the past decade has been due to a number of factors. First, water-based systems, especially paints and coatings, avoid many of the environ mental problems associated with the solvent-based systems. Second, polymer colloid products can be...

Controlled thermonuclear fusion is one of the possible candidates for long term energy sources which will be indispensable for our highly technological society. However, the physics and technology of controlled fusion are extremely complex and still require a great deal of research and development before fusion can be a practical energy source. For producing energy via controlled fusion a deuterium-tritium gas has to be heated to temperatures of a few 100 Million c corres ponding to about 10 keV. For net energy gain, this hot plasma has to be confined at a certain density for a certain time...
