Was sind die Widerstandigkeiten des Jazz? Zu dieser Frage haben sich im Laufe der Jazzgeschichte zwei zentrale Interpretationen herausgebildet. So gilt Jazz einerseits als afroamerikanische Subversion gegen rassistische Unterdruckung. Andererseits wird das emanzipatorische Potential dieser Musik gerne der Improvisation zugeschrieben. Anhand von historischem Material und Interviews mit Jazzmusikern geht der Autor diesen etablierten Selbstverstandlichkeiten des Jazz kritisch nach und untersucht die Dialektik von Herrschaft und Befreiung unter kulturindustriellen Imperativen.
