Nanotechnology for Environmental Remediation

Sung Hee Joo; Frank Cheng
The book examines the suitability of nanoscale zero-valent iron (ZVI) for degradation of agrochemicals for the purpose of developing a cost-effective treatment technology. It identifies by-products produced from the ZVI-mediated degradation process of particular contaminants, and clarifies the reaction mechanism by which ZVI degrades a chosen contaminant. It also assesses how the ZVI-based technology may be applied in complex, natural systems, the limitations to implementation, and possible avenues for further research which might improve the viability of the process.

Carbon-Functional Organosilicon Compounds

Vaclav Chvalovsky
The term "carbon-functional organosilicon compound" is used for organosilicon compounds in which a functional group is bonded to an organic moiety that is in turn con- nected to silicon via a Si-C bond. Thus, only Si-Cn-Y com- pounds (Y designates a functional group) will be discussed in this book 1 Si-O-Cn-Y compounds will in general not be considered, although the latter group does include a large number of natural substances containing silylated hydroxyl groups. (Because of the differing importance of various Y groups, the reader will find some deviation from this restriction). Finally,...

Cooperative Phenomena in Jahn--Teller Crystals

Michael D. Kaplan; Benjamin G. Vekhter; Michael D. Kaplan
This book by Kaplan and Vekhter brings together the molecular world of the chemist with the condensed matter world of the physicist. Prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union, chemists in the West devoted lit- to relationships between molecular electronic structure and tle attention solid-state vibronic phenomena. Treating quantum mechanical problems wherein the adiabatic Born-Oppenheimer approximation fails was done by "brute force. " With bigger and better computers available in the West, molecular orbital calculations were done on observed and conceived static structures with little...

Gas Phase Inorganic Chemistry

David H. Russell; David H. Russell
The field of gas phase inorganic ion chemistry is relatively new; the early studies date back approximately twenty years, but there has been intense interest and development in the field in the last ten years. As with much of modern chemistry, the growth in gas phase inorganic ion chemistry can be traced to the development of instrumentation and new experimental methods. Studies in this area require sophisticated instruments and sample introduc- tion/ ionization methods, and often these processes are complicated by the need for state-selecting (or collisionally stabilizing) the reactive...

Metal Dihydrogen and σ-Bond Complexes

Gregory J. Kubas
According to R.H. Crabtree, Metal Dihydrogen and sigma-Bond Complexes is described as the definitive account of twentieth-century work in the area of sigma complexation'. It covers not only Kubas' discovery of dihydrogen coordination and the study of its structure and general properties but also discusses both the theoretical beliefs and experimental results of bonding and activation of dihydrogen on metal centers and the coordination and activation of C-H, B-H, X-H, and X-Y bonds, giving an overview of one of the hottest areas in chemistry'.

Organometallic Chemistry of the Transition Elements

Florian P. Pruchnik
Organometallic chemistry belongs to the most rapidly developing area of chemistry today. This is due to the fact that research dealing with the structure of compounds and chemical bonding has been greatly intensified in recent years. Additionally, organometallic compounds have been widely utilized in catalysis, organic synthesis, electronics, etc. This book is based on my lectures concerning basic organometallic chemistry for fourth and fifth year chemistry students and on my lectures concerning advanced organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis for Ph.D. graduate students. Many...

Metal Interactions with Boron Clusters

Russell N. Grimes
Molecular clusters, in the broad sense that the term is commonly understood, today comprise an enormous class of species extending into virtually every important area of chemistry: "naked" metal clusters, transition metal carbonyl clusters, hydrocarbon cages such as cubane (C H ) and dodecahedrane (C H ), 8 8 20 20 organometallic cluster complexes, enzymes containing Fe S or MoFe S 4 4 3 4 cores, high polymers based on carborane units, and, of course, the many kinds of polyhedral borane species. So large is the area spanned by these diverse classes that any attempt to deal with them...

Inorganometallic Chemistry

Thomas P. Fehlner
There is a certain fascination associated with words. The manipulation of strings of symbols according to mutually accepted rules allows a language to express history as well as to formulate challenges for the future. But language changes as old words are used in a new context and new words are created to describe changing situations. How many words has the computer revolution alone added to languages? "Inorganometallic" is a word you probably have never encountered before. It is one created from old words to express a new presence. A strange sounding word, it is also a term fraught with...

Computational Methods for the Determination of Formation Constants

David J. Leggett
This volume is concerned with methods that are available for the calculation of for- mation constants, in particular computational procedures. Although graphical meth- ods have considerable value in the exploration of primary (raw) data they have been overtaken by computational methods, which, for the most part, take primary data and return the refined formation constants. Graphical methods are now considered com- plementary to these general computational procedures. This volume brings together programs that span the lifetime of computer-assisted determination of formation constants. On one...
