Even three decades ago, the words 'combinatorial algebra' contrasting, for in stance, the words 'combinatorial topology, ' were not a common designation for some branch of mathematics. The collocation 'combinatorial group theory' seems to ap pear first as the title of the book by A. Karras, W. Magnus, and D. Solitar 182] and, later on, it served as the title of the book by R. C. Lyndon and P. Schupp 247]. Nowadays, specialists do not question the existence of 'combinatorial algebra' as a special algebraic activity. The activity is distinguished not only by its objects of research (that are...

The material of this book is based on several courses which have been delivered for a long time at the Moscow Institute for Physics and Technology. Some parts have formed the subject of lectures given at various universities throughout the world: Freie Universitat of Berlin, Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Goteborg, University of California at Santa Barbara and others. The subject of the book is the theory of queues. This theory, as a mathematical discipline, begins with the work of A. Erlang, who examined a model of a telephone station and obtained the famous formula...

This book is devoted to the mathematical theory of regularization methods and gives an account of the currently available results about regularization methods for linear and nonlinear ill-posed problems. Both continuous and iterative regularization methods are considered in detail with special emphasis on the development of parameter choice and stopping rules which lead to optimal convergence rates.

N atur non facit saltus? This book is devoted to the fundamental problem which arises contin uously in the process of the human investigation of reality: the role of a mathematical apparatus in a description of reality. We pay our main attention to the role of number systems which are used, or may be used, in this process. We shall show that the picture of reality based on the standard (since the works of Galileo and Newton) methods of real analysis is not the unique possible way of presenting reality in a human brain. There exist other pictures of reality where other num ber fields are used...

The present book is the outcome of efforts to introduce topological connectedness as one of the basic tools for the study of necessary conditions for an extremum. Apparently this monograph is the first book in the theory of maxima and minima where topological connectedness is used so widely for this purpose. Its application permits us to obtain new results in this sphere and to consider the classical results from a nonstandard point of view. Regarding the style of the present book it should be remarked that it is comparatively elementary. The author has made constant efforts to make the book...

This collection contains papers conceptually related to the classical ideas of Sophus Lie (i.e., to Lie groups and Lie algebras). Obviously, it is impos sible to embrace all such topics in a book of reasonable size. The contents of this one reflect the scientific interests of those authors whose activities, to some extent at least, are associated with the International Sophus Lie Center. We have divided the book into five parts in accordance with the basic topics of the papers (although it can be easily seen that some of them may be attributed to several parts simultaneously). The first part...

The aim of this book is a detailed study of topological effects related to continuity of the dependence of solutions on initial values and parameters. This allows us to develop cheaply a theory which deals easily with equations having singularities and with equations with multivalued right hand sides (differential inclusions). An explicit description of corresponding topological structures expands the theory in the case of equations with continuous right hand sides also. In reality, this is a new science where Ordinary Differential Equations, General Topology, Integration theory and...

This volume proposes and explores a new definition of logarithmic mappings as invertible selectors of multifunctions induced by linear operators with domains and ranges in an algebra over a field of characteristic zero. Several previously published results are presented. Amongst the applications of logarithmic and antilogarithmic mappings are the solution of linear and nonlinear equations in algebras of square matrices. Some results may also provide numerical algorithms for the approximation of solutions.

The last fifty years have witnessed several monographs and hundreds of research articles on the theory, constructive methods and wide spectrum of applications of boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations. In this vast field of research, the conjugate (Hermite) and the right focal point (Abei) types of problems have received the maximum attention. This is largely due to the fact that these types of problems are basic, in the sense that the methods employed in their study are easily extendable to other types of prob lems. Moreover, the conjugate and the right focal point types...

This book is devoted to some results from the classical Point Set Theory and their applications to certain problems in mathematical analysis of the real line. Notice that various topics from this theory are presented in several books and surveys. From among the most important works devoted to Point Set Theory, let us first of all mention the excellent book by Oxtoby 83] in which a deep analogy between measure and category is discussed in detail. Further, an interesting general approach to problems concerning measure and category is developed in the well-known monograph by Morgan 79] where a...
