Following a suggestion by the Gesellschaft fur Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik (GAMM) the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mecha nics (IUTAM) decided to sponsor a Symposium on "Laminar-Turbulent Tran sition." Originally planned to be held in Oberwolfach, where the number of participants would have had to have been rather limited, the overwhelming response to the first announcement made it clear that the larger facili ties at the University of Stuttgart would be more appropriate. The Scientific Committee decided that the Symposium should concentrate on fundamental mechanisms...

The Symposium was initiated in 1977 by Dr. M. G. CHABERT, Directeur des plans et programmes du C. E. T. I. M. His death, which occurred a few weeks before the Symposium, was deeply felt by all participants, who decided to dedicate this volume to his memory. The purpose, as set out by Dr. CHABERT, was to bring together people speaking the language of research and the language of industry in discussing problems of structural analysis. The Centre Technique des Industries M~caniques (C. E. T. I. M. ) at Sen1is was considered a suitable place for organizing such a meeting. Modern structural...

The Third IUTAM Symposium on Creep in Structures was held at Leicester University in September 1980 thereby continuing the tradition of a ten yearly review of progress in structural creep initiated by the previous symposia held at Stanford University in 1960 and Chalmers University in 1970. The thirty eight papers and their discussions cont ained in this volume testify to the vigour of research into the creep of structures at the present time. During the last ten years a gradual change of emphasis has occurred in creep research from studies of deformation and stability towards the description...

In 1969 scientists came together for the first time to discuss problems of instability of continuous systems on a IUTAM - Symposium. Since then twelve years of a fast and interesting development in the field of stability have passed. Therefore it was necessary to arrange a meeting for scientists again in order to exchange experiences and opinions about this topic. In 1978 the Bureau of IUTAM asked me to become chairman of the scientific committee of the Second IUTAM Symposium on Stability in the Mechanics of Continua and to organize this meeting. The following scientists have been appointed...

The IUTAM Symposium on Three-dimensional Turbulent Boundary Layers was suggested by the Gesellschaft fur Angewandte Mathe- matik (GAMM) and sponsored by the International Union of theor- etical and Applied Mechanics. The symposium was organized by H.H. Fernholz (Hermann-Fottinger-Institut fur Thermo- und Fluiddynamik der Technischen Universitat Berlin) and E. Krause (Aerodynamisches Institut der RWTH Aachen). After two success- ful Euromech Colloquia on the same topic in Berlin 1972 and Trondheim 1975 the organizers felt that another meeting should be convened, this time with participants...

Recent progress in the study of nonlinear wave propagation has been influenced by developments in mechanics, acoustics, hydro dynamics, plasma physics and many other fields of physics. This vast field of research has also given rise to fascinating mathe matical ideas: the inverse scattering method and the technique of exterior differential forms being just some to be mentioned. Obviously the theory of nonlinear waves may be interpreted as an interdisciplinary study with the mechanics of continuous media as a theoretical basis. This was the starting point of the proposal to the General...

The present book contains the papers that have been presented at the IUTAM-Symposium on Atmospheric Dispersion of Heavy Gases and Small Particles, which was held from August 29th to September 2nd 1983 in Scheveningen in The Netherlands. Attendees from many countries were present; 4 review lectures and about 25 research papers were presented. The realization of the symposium was made possible by the support of Delft University of Technology Koninklijke/Shell-Laboratory Amsterdam Prins Maurits Laboratory/Institute for Chemical and Technological Research Royal Netherlands Meteorological...

The IUTAM Symposium on Probabilistic Methods in the Mechanics of Solids and Structures, dedicated to the memory of Waloddi Weibull, was held in Stockholm, Sweden, June 19-21, 1984, on the initiative of the Swedish National Committee for Mech anics and the Aeronautical Research Institute of Sweden, FFA. The purpose of the symposium was to bring together mathema ticians that develop the theory of stochastic processes and methods for reliability analysis, with engineers that apply these theories and methods to model loads, strengths and structures for the advancement of structural safety....
