Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Coeliac Disease in Children

Hadziselimovic F. Ed; F. Hadziselimovic; B. Herzog
Despite significant progress in modern gastroenterology, the aetiology of inflammatory bowel disease as well as coeliac disease is still to a great extent unknown and poorly understood. The principles of treatment - particularly of IBD - emphasize the importance of a combined medical and surgical approach. This book is the proceedings of an international symposium that brought together workers from many disciplines involved in the treatment of IBD and coeliac disease, and is a useful update on recent advances in paediatric and paediatric-surgical gastroenterology. F. Hadziselimovic, B....

Cholestatic Liver Diseases in Children and Adults

C. Broelsch; Cristoph E. Broelsch; Christoph E. Broelsch-Houssin
Cholestatic disorders of infancy and adulthood represent a major group of causes of end-stage chronic liver disease. There has been great scientific interest in these disorders in recent years, so the time has come to evaluate treatment modalities in old and even new cholestatic diseases. Since secondary malnutrition plays an important role in inducing multiorgan morbidity in these patients, nutritional and metabolic aspects need better understanding. The influence of disease and nutrition-related problems on liver transplantation as the ultimate therapy of cholestatic disorders is also of...

Interventional Endoscopy in Hepatology

H. Neuhaus; J. F. Riemann
Diagnostic and interventional endoscopy has made rapid progress in recent years. Several methods are still under development and need to be properly evaluated. Bile duct diseases may have a negative impact on the liver, so early diagnosis and minimal invasive treatment options are important. Liver transplantation is now established for the treatment of liver failure. Hepatic surgery may lead to problems in the bile ducts which can be treated by endoscopic intervention. A broad spectrum of indications for interventional endoscopy in hepatology exists.

Hepatobiliary Diseases: Cholestasis and Gallstone

M. Acalovschi; G. Paumgartner; M. Acalovschi
In recent years, our knowledge about the pathogenesis, pathophysiology and treatment of hepatobiliary diseases has increased considerably. The molecular basis of cholestatic disorders as well as of gallstonedisease is increasingly recognized. This has resulted in improved diagnosis, for instance in hereditary forms of intrahepatic cholestasis, and advances in treatment, for example in primary biliary cirrhosis and otherchronic cholestatic disorders. This book, the proceedings of a Falk Workshop held in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, on June 9-10, 2000, brings together contributions from scientists and...

Prevention of Progression in Chronic Liver Disease: An Update on Snmc (Stronger Neo-Minophagen C). in Honour of Hans Popper's 100th Birthday

N. Hayashi; M. P. Manns; N. Hiyashi

In several liver diseases, the underlying cause cannot always be eliminated, i.e. the progression of liver disease cannot be prevented. This is particularly true for non-responders to the treatment of chronic hepatitis C (HCV). It is relevant for more than 40% of patients with HCV genotype 1 and up to 20% of patients with genotype 2 or 3. Several approaches are now underway to prevent or ameliorate mechanisms of disease progression. In Asia, and particularly in Japan, Glycyrrhizine-SNMC has been widely used for this purpose. At present, SNMC is under clinical evaluation in Europe.

Glucocorticoid Therapy in Chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease: From Basic Principles to Rational Therapy

H. W. Mollmann; B. May
The clinical efficacy of glucocorticoids in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease has been confirmed in a multitude of controlled monocentre and multicentre studies as well as from observations of the clinical course of the disease. Although, in the past, the treatment recommendations, dose regimen, substance selection and mode of administration were deduced principally from clinical trials, in recent years experimental research has yielded a mass of therapeutically significant new results. This seeks to optimize the clinical effects of the steroids and minimize their adverse events on...

Functional Dyspepsia and Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Concepts and Controversies

H. Goebell; G. Holtmann; N. J. Talley
In recent years functional gastrointestinal disorders have attracted much interest. These disorders are extremely common. They are characterized by symptoms and the lack of structural lesions that can be identified with clinically available routine diagnostic tests. Several functional abnormalities are now believed to play a role in the development of the symptoms. This book summarizes the presentations at the International Falk Symposium No. 99 Functional Dyspepsia and Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Concepts and Controversies' that took place on May 27-28, 1997. This symposium brought together...

Hepatobiliary Transport: From Bench to Bedside

Siegfried Matern; Dietrich Keppler; James L. Boyer
There has been a tremendous amount of scientific progress in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of transport processes in the liver within the last few years. Cloning of various members of organic anion and cation transporters has provided the necessary tools to study their regulation under physiological and pathophysiological conditions and has advanced our knowledge about bile formation. Mutations of various hepatic organic anion transporters have been identified in humans as hereditary defects leading to the heterogenous syndrome of progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis...

Cytokines in Liver Injury and Repair

A. M. Gressner; P. C. Heinrich; S. Matern

This book, the proceedings of Falk Symposium No. 125 on 'Cytokines in Liver Injury and Repair' (Progress in Gastroenterology and Hepatology Part II), held in Hannover, Germany, on September 30 - October 1, 2001, provides an update of our current knowledge on the role of cytokines in various human and experimental liver diseases and on their present and prospective use in therapeutic trials.

Developments in recent years include: Since the first report of a cytokine knockout mouse for IL-2 in 1991 a large number of cytokine and cytokine receptor genes have been inactivated in mouse...

Autoimmune Diseases in Pediatric Gastroenterology

F. Hadziselimovic

This book is the proceedings of the Falk Symposium No. 127 on Autoimmune Diseases in Paediatric Gastroenterology' (IV International Falk Symposium on Paediatric Gastroenterology), held in Basel, Switzerland, on November 8-9, 2001. The symposium focused on the role of the immune system, both the acquired and the innate systems, in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in children and adolescents. The innate system has an important fundamental role in host defence by initiating immune responses against potentially deleterious matter. However, a mutation within the innate system may elicit an...
