Advances in Nemertean Biology: Proceedings of the Third International Meeting on Nemertean Biology, Y Coleg Normal, Bangor, North Wales, August 10-15

R. Gibson; J. Moore; P. Sundberg
In any scientific discipline, meetings with presented papers and discussions are the most effective stimulus to the advancement of knowledge. Nemerteans have long been largely neglected because their taxonomy is difficult: the need for histological study of serial sections has proved inhibiting to most zoologists. During the last twenty years, however, this intriguing phylum has attracted the attention both of increasing numbers of taxonomists as well as of workers interested in many aspects of, for example, their ecology, evolution, physiology and fine structure. The enthusiam stemming from...

Saline Lakes V: Proceedings of the Vth International Symposium on Inland Saline Lakes, Held in Bolivia, 22-29 March 1991

Stuart H. Hurlbert
The Vth International Symposium on Inland Saline Lakes was held at Hotel Titikaka on the shores of that lake, 22--29 March 1991 with participants from 16 countries. Twenty-three papers presented by the participants, plus an additional one reporting a microcosm study on salinity effects, constitute the present volume. The papers cover the wide array of subject matters and scales characteristic of our interdiscipline' and represent the symposium well.
All manuscripts submitted for these proceedings were critically reviewed by at least three referees and are representative of saline lake...

Toolik Lake: Ecology of an Aquatic Ecosystem in Arctic Alaska

James J. O'Brien
The limnological study of Toolik Lake began in the Summer of 1975. This research was an outgrowth of the arctic IBP project which had focused mainly on small Arctic pond ecosystems on the Alaskan Arctic coastal plain. It was thought desirable to study larger, deeper lakes which contained fish to further generalizations developed during the IBP study.
Initial research on Toolik Lake and the surrounding lakes and ponds focused on process studies such as annual primary productivity of the lake or the vertical migration patterns of the resident zooplankton. In 1983 the philosophy of the...

Sediment/Water Interactions: Proceedings of the Fifth International Symposium

B. T. Hart; P. G. Sly
The papers appearing in this volume reflect the current attention in sediment/water science to five main topics of investigation: Sediment dynamics in estuaries, coastal waters, lakes, reservoirs and rivers; Sediment-associated biological processes; Contaminant accumulation, distribution and geochemistry; Fluxes from sediments; and Element cycling.
Contributors address sediment/water interactions related to both fresh and salt water conditions.

Environmental History and Palaeolimnology: Proceedings of the Vth International Symposium on Palaeolimnology, Held in Cumbria, U.K.

J. P. Smith; P. G. Appleby; R. W. Battarbee
The fifth International Symposium on Palaeolimnology was held at Ambleside in the English Lake District from August 31 to September 6, 1989. During the 65 papers were presented at seven sessions and 52 posters symposium displayed. Three late afternoon/evening special lectures were given, one of which was a memorial to the late Ed. Deevey, to whom this volume is dedicated. Associated with the symposium were five excursions to various parts of the UK and Ireland, and a visit to the laboratories of the Freshwater Biological Association and Institute of Freshwater Ecology. Conference participants...

Diversity and Function in Mangrove Ecosystems: Proceedings of Mangrove Symposia Held in Toulouse, France, 9-10 July 1997 and 8-10 July 1998

Richard S. Dodd
Mangroves are salt-adapted plants that are found along many of the world's tropical and sub-tropical coastlines. Regrettably, these plants are being lost due to over-exploitation, pollution, conversion to agriculture and aquaculture and other causes. This is having important consequences for local human populations that traditionally rely on this resource, and is upsetting the fine balance needed to maintain this highly productive ecosystem.
This text brings together some papers from two recent international symposia on the mangrove ecosystem. It provides an outline of future directions...
