The Vth International Symposium on Inland Saline Lakes was held at Hotel Titikaka on the shores of that lake, 22--29 March 1991 with participants from 16 countries. Twenty-three papers presented by the participants, plus an additional one reporting a microcosm study on salinity effects, constitute the present volume. The limnological study of Toolik Lake began in the Summer of 1975. This research was an outgrowth of the arctic IBP project which had focused mainly on small Arctic pond ecosystems on the Alaskan Arctic coastal plain. It was thought desirable to study larger, deeper lakes which contained fish to further generalizations developed during the IBP study.

Proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Coelenterate Biology 1989

The fifth International Symposium on Palaeolimnology was held at Ambleside in the English Lake District from August 31 to September 6, 1989. During the 65 papers were presented at seven sessions and 52 posters symposium displayed. Three late afternoon/evening special lectures were given, one of which was a memorial to the late Ed. Deevey, to whom this volume is dedicated. Associated with the symposium were five excursions to various parts of the UK and Ireland, and a visit to the laboratories of the Freshwater Biological Association and Institute of Freshwater Ecology. Mangroves are salt-adapted plants that are found along many of the world's tropical and sub-tropical coastlines. Regrettably, these plants are being lost due to over-exploitation, pollution, conversion to agriculture and aquaculture and other causes. This is having important consequences for local human populations that traditionally rely on this resource, and is upsetting the fine balance needed to maintain this highly productive ecosystem.
