1. 1. Definition of L-forms. In the years 1907-1911 O. Toeplitz 21, 22, 23, 24]* studied a class of quadratic forms whose matrix is of the follO\"ing type: (Ll) C-2 C_I Co C-n-I Cn-I The elements Cn are given complex constants. Toeplitz designated these forms as L-forms and investigated in detail their relation to the analytic function defined in a neighborhood of the unit circle by the Laurent series 2; C z," n = n - 00, . . ., 00; this series is assumed to be convergent in a certain circular ring rl

Gian-Carlo Rota was born in Vigevano, Italy, in 1932. He died in Cambridge, Mas- sachusetts, in 1999. He had several careers, most notably as a mathematician, but also as a philosopher and a consultant to the United States government. His mathe- matical career was equally varied. His early mathematical studies were at Princeton (1950 to 1953) and Yale (1953 to 1956). In 1956, he completed his doctoral thesis under the direction of Jacob T. Schwartz. This thesis was published as the pa- per "Extension theory of differential operators I," the first paper reprinted in this volume. Rota's early...

We present here the mathematical papers of Hassler Whitney. This collection contains all the published papers, with the exception of some short announcements that Whitney did not wish to be included. We also include the introduction to his book Geometric Integration Theory, and one previously unpublished manuscript on the four-color problem. The papers are presented under some broad categories: graphs- and combinatorics, differentiable functions and singularities, analytic spaces, manifolds, bundles and characteristic classes, topology and algebraic topology, geometric integration theory....

This collection contains all my published papers, both research and expository, that were published from 1934 to 1988. The research papers arranged in chronological order appear in Volume I and II and in the first part of Volume III. The expository papers, which are mainly reports presented at conferences, appear in chronological order in the last part of Volume III. Volume I covers the period 1910 to 1947, the year I moved to Yale, Volume II covers the period 1947 to 1965 when I became Chairman of the Department at Yale and Volume III covers the period from 1965 to 1989, which goes beyond my...

These seleeta contain 761 of the more than 2600 pages of 1. J. Schoenberg's published articles. The selection made and the grouping in which the papers are presented here reflect most strongly Schoenberg's wishes. The first volume of these seleeta is drawn from Schoenberg's remarkable work on Number Theory, Positive Definite Functions and Metric Geometry, Real and Complex Analysis, and on the Landau Problem. Schoenberg's fundamental papers on Total Pos- itivity and Variation Diminution, on P6lya Frequency functions and sequences, and on Splines, especially Cardinal Splines, make up the second...
