Entstanden vor/um Mitte des 9. Jahrhunderts, sind der altsachsische Heliand (eine dichterische Nacherzahlung des Lebens Christi) und die fragmentarisch erhaltene altsachsische Genesis die ersten groepischen Zeugnisse des deutschen Sprachraums. Sie verbinden die Gattungstradition der spatantik-fruhchristilichen Bibelepik mit der Formtradition germanischer Stabreimdichtung.
