Since a clear understanding of the pelvic floor region is crucial for both male and female pelvic surgery and for fundamental mechanisms of urogenital and/or ano-rectal dysfunction and treatment, the authors present a morphological concept that is in accordance with actual clinical concepts. The reinterpreted anatomical concept is compared to classical morphological ideas and what is most important to functional considerations.

Over the last years, numerous studies have provided new insights into the structural and functional organization of the human cortical motor system. The data reviewed in this book indicate that striking similarities have been found between humans and non-human primates.

The studies described here were carried out in the Neuroregulation Group at the Department of Physiology of the University of Leiden. Over the last decade this group has, in close collaboration with the departments of neurosurgery and urology of the Academic Hospital of Leiden, studied development and regeneration of the spinal cord and its peripheral nerves both from a neuroanatomical and a clinical perspective. During this period the development of brainstem projections to the spinal cord of the rat was studied with a retrograde tracing technique. Horseradish peroxidase was injected into...

The rapidly-developing field of confined polymers is reviewed in this volume. Special emphasis is given to polymer aspects of this interdisciplinary problem. Taken together, the contributions offer ample evidence of how the field of polymer science continues to evolve with the passage of time. The topics revolve around the tendency of surfaces to impede chain relaxation and to stimulate new sorts of chain organization. These have been implicated in a variety of spectacular phenomena. Here is a listing of authors and affiliations: K. Binder (Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz, Germany);...

It was at the fifth SEEP-Conference on Economic Ethics and philosophy in autumn 1997 that the organizational work of the seventh conference in 1999 was entrusted to the editors of this volume. Prof. Peter Koslowski, series editor of The Studies in Economic Ethics and Philosophy, SEEP, expressed the hope that the SEEP-Conference be held in the Far-East for the fist time would bring a new comparative aspect to economic ethics and philosophy. Further, the agenda of economic ethics seemed to increase its significance also in Japan and other Asian countries especially due to the spread of...

This book provides an overview of the developments in the area of Bayesian evaluation of informative hypotheses that took place since the publication of the ?rst paper on this topic in 2001 Hoijtink, H. Con?rmatory latent class analysis, model selection using Bayes factors and (pseudo) likelihood ratio statistics. Multivariate Behavioral Research, 36, 563-588]. The current state of a?airs was presented and discussed by the authors of this book during a workshop in Utrecht in June 2007. Here we would like to thank all authors for their participation, ideas, and contributions. We would also...

This is the only book entirely devoted to the sensory circumventricular organs. It reviews research into their detailed anatomy, neurochemistry, neural connections, and functions, and provides the reader with many illustrations previously unpublished.

Human impact on natural landscapes through urbanization and agricultural expansion are becoming more and more dramatic and are the cause of serious environmental problems. This volume examines the effect of landscape disturbance on plant and animal diversity in the five mediterranean-climate regions of the world. It begins with three introductory chapters broadly reviewing the issues of landscape degradation. Further contributions describe regional land use conflicts in each of the five regions. Landscape disturbance and plant diversity, and landscape disturbance and animal diversity are...

Enhanced performance, evaluation, and interpretation of the various forms ofcardi- ological diagnostic procedures and open-heart surgery, the achievement of a rapid improvement in the oxygen consumption ofhypoxic myocardium, and the salvage of viable but ischemic myocardium still appear to constitute the most important chal- lenges to modern medicine. Research on the vascular anatomyof the myocardium has mostlybeen focused on the coronary arteries and myocardial capillaries (von Liidinghausen 2002); by com- parison, the coronaryor cardiac venous systems have traditionally been neglected. A...

Advances in cell, developmental and molecular biology, and the discovery of regeneration-competent cells in many non-regenerating mammalian tissues, have given impetus to systematic investigations that will enable us to regenerate these tissues by cell transplantation or the pharmaceutical induction of regeneration from the body's own tissues. A significant avenue of research is the identification of the soluble and insoluble signals and their transduction pathways that govern the proliferation and differentiation of regeneration-competent cells, and the signals that inhibit their activity...
