Nanoparticulate controlled delivery systems as carriers for small and large molecules offer numerous advantages compared to conventional dosage forms, which include improved efficacy and stability, reduced toxicity, and improved patient compliance and convenience. Periodontal diseases are localized inflammation of the periodontal pocket caused by bacterial infection, which can results in tooth loss. A prerequisite for drug delivery systems for localized periodontal therapy is retention on the mucosal surface of periodontal pocket and controlled drug release at the site of action. Surface-modified-biodegradable-polymeric-nanoparticulate system could be a useful tool for improved retention and prolonged drug release. The main aims of treating periodontal disease are to cure inflamed tissue, reduce bacteria and eliminate the periodontal pocket. In the light of above mentioned fact, the nano-carriers loaded with antimicrobial agent in combination with immunosuppressive or anti-inflammatory agents or anti-caries agents can provide a better therapeutic tool for intra-pocket delivery.
