Phosphorus by virtue of its unique nature, peculiar electronic configuration and orbital energies reacts with both electropositive and electronegative elements forming strong bonds. This led to the existence of a wide range of organophosphorus compounds containing several functional groups. The first organophosphorus chemistry had its beginning in the second half of the 19th century. Some early syntheses were performed by P. E. Thenard and A. W. von Hofmann, but it was the pioneering work in the laboratory of Karl Arnold August Michaelis at the University of Rostock, Germany, from 1874 to 1916, that led to the discovery and characterization of some of the major functional groups and these methods are still in use today. But the research in this field is found yet meager. This wide interesting background of organophosphorus compounds motivated us to carry out our research on - and beta-functionalized organophosphorus compounds. This book provides valuable information on the new methodologies for the synthesis of some organic compounds particularly - and beta-functionalized organophosphorus compounds.
