During the 1990s there was vigorous research about the specific influences of parenting on children's development. The effects of parenting on three domains of development are especially important: children's academic achievement and intelligence; social-emotional development; and risk-taking behaviours during the adolescent years. The research agendas have been diverse in terms of populations studied, methodologies used, designs employed (naturalistic versus interventions to change outcomes), and conceptual or theoretical models used to guide data collection analysis. In this text, the editors search for when, where and how parenting matters and for the major antecedents and moderators of effective parenting. They also show how culture and parenting are interwoven, to chart future research directions, and to help parents and professionals understand the implications of major research findings.
