Dr. Sawant surveyed 16 functional Institutional Repositories (IRs) developed in India. In her twofold study she investigated various issues concerning the development and management of institutional repositories. Further she explored the knowledge, practice and opinions about IR among the IR users. This included scientists, faculty members, students, etc. who may or may not be using the IR facility.

The study examined institutional repositories containing documents on womens studies developed in India and Canada. The study first identified repositories in India and Canada, then developed tool for evaluation and finally evaluated repositories against the criteria developed by the researcher.
