Throughout the 1984 and 1985 seasons, as a major league groundskeeper, I was granted the pleasure of playing with major league baseball players. I was able to play catch, hit, sit in the bullpen and eat with professional athletes. In Dr. Foreman's class I also learned the definition of a professional is one who is paid for what they do, and I did get paid. I had caught the dream of my youth. This book is about the experiences and the joy of living the dream.

I had heard many retired teachers speak of their experiences as substitute teachers and the joy they found in not needing to prepare lesson plans, attend meetings, meet state standards, be concerned about political agendas, administration, disgruntled parents, and staff. The best part was to be sought after with relentless passion by secretaries to the point of begging them to substitute as the school was short of help.
