R.W. Bullard was the first British Consul General in post-revolutionary Russia. Although broadly sympathetic to the aims of the revolution (he was the son of a dock worker and described himself as a former rebel and socialist), he was unable to ignore the evidence of his own eyes. He recorded his experiences and impressions in a secret diary, some of which was written in code.
