This writing is assembled in 2015 by their youngest son to honor the lives and courage of Klara & Heinz Meine and their dedication to family as they weathered the difficult period in Germany between World Wars, their ordeals and tests of courage during World War II and their daring escape from Russian occupation eventually leading to their new lives in America.

This commentary uses first hand experiences and research of published accounts of US military actions in Vietnam that can only be described as "the dark side" of that conflict, or deviance in a military setting, while also acknowledging the sacrifices of those who served. The commentary offers explanations of events, politics and policies that may well have led to the deviant behaviors described.
