Their investigation brings them to the astonishingly prosperous town of Lesko, a place seemingly overflowing with opportunity and success. Lawrence ist ein fahrender Kaufmann, der davon träumt, sich irgendwann mit einem eigenen Ladengeschäft in einer Stadt niederzulassen. Mit einer Ladung Weizen und Marderfellen auf seinem Pferdewagen stattet er dem Dorf Pasloe einen Besuch ab. Im Dorf findet gerade das alljährliche Erntefest statt, das einem Wolf als Verkörperung der Erntegottheit gewidmet ist.
